London's biggest indoor Navratri is trying something new this year: teaching the floor before the music starts.

London Navratri Nights will run free raas workshops each evening before doors, led by choreographer Priya Nair, in a bid to welcome the newcomers who often hover at the edge of the circle, unsure how to join.

Lowering the barrier

"Every year there are people standing at the side who want to dance and don't know how to start," Nair said. "The workshop is permission. Twenty minutes and you're in the circle."

Building the next generation

For organizers, the workshops are also a long game — a way to bring younger and non-Gujarati attendees into a tradition that depends on each generation choosing to carry it forward.

Workshops are free with any event ticket and require no prior experience.
