Playback & Live Garba Vocalist
Falguni Rawal
Ahmedabad, Gujarat
- Traditional Garba
- Raas
- Sugam Sangeet
Falguni Rawal did not set out to be a headliner. She grew up singing bhajans at her grandmother's temple in the old city of Ahmedabad, learning to hold a note over the clang of the aarti bell. By her teens she was filling in for absent singers at neighborhood Garbas, and by twenty-five she was closing out the main ground at one of Gujarat's largest commercial Navratri events.
A voice built for the ground
What sets Rawal apart is stamina and control. A commercial Garba night can run seven hours; the voice has to survive not just the length but the heat, the dust, and the relentless tempo. Rawal trained for it the way an athlete trains — vocal rest, breath work, and a refusal to over-sing the early hours so she has something left for the 2 a.m. peak.
Tradition, arranged
Rawal is a traditionalist who refuses to be a purist. Her sets move from unaccompanied taali Garba — just voice and clapping — to full-band raas with synth pads and a programmed dhol. "The goddess doesn't care what instruments you use," she likes to say. "She cares whether you mean it."
